19th Century Huge Copper Cheese Vat

Sold

This impressive copper bowl is circa 1880, sourced in Provence, where they are still used in cheese making.

With these bowls it is all about the colour, and this one has some lovely natural verdigris patina on the inside.  These antique cheese vats are water tight, made from thick gauge copper.  This one does have some old repairs along the lip which are quite hard to notice and really add to it.  If these vats are placed outside in the elements they will change colour over the years, like any copper and get better and better.

We love these as a sculptural garden piece or even planted with an olive tree - our kids think these would make a great hot tub or fountain for them to swim in!  They are even more beautiful filled with water.

In 13 years i have found x 5 of these, 2 were used for hot and cold tubs in a chalet, 1 was a water feature in a turning circle and the last two went as a pair outside a very smart swimming pool house.

80 cm h x 160 diameter.
