This rare panel would have been the backrest of a fairground ride (like the backrest of a sledge seat). We believe it to be early 19th century from Germany.
It is a carved wooden face with relief details mounted onto a tin pate. The carving has several layers of paint and sliver and gold gilding. The texture and colour that is revealed by removing some of these layers is incredible.
The reverse is leatherette.
It is a very unusual piece and would make a great decorative talking piece.
