Antique Spanish Wine Jar

Sold

Circa 1900 this wonderful antique wine jar is from Miravet in Catalonia. In Spanish these are 'tinajas' which translates as bowl.

Used for hundreds of years for storing anything from wine to nuts.  These are glazed inside and would have been used specifically for making wine.  There is a current trend in the wine industry to use these terracotta pots for their clean / pure tasting wines which are not effected by the wooden barrels.

Wonderful patina that only years of use and weather can create.

A few bumps and scrapes but all have been checked and there are no cracks. We are often asked if these will be ok outside in the frost.  They are over 100 years old so we cannot guarantee them but the terracotta is over 5 cm thick and these have often been outside in the mountains most of their lives.  We haven't had any problems with this thus far.

We love these as simply beautiful decorative items but also perfect planted up inside or out.
